CAT Habitation Underwriting Supervisor

Evaluates submissions for new and renewal business within our CAT-focused habitation programs. Oversees underwriting operations related to catastrophe-exposed risks, including habitational property portfolios. This role is responsible for supervising underwriting staff, managing catastrophe exposure, and ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines while supporting profitable program growth.


Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Oversees underwriting of new and renewal business for CAT-exposed habitation risks, ensuring compliance with program guidelines and carrier requirements.

  • Supervises and mentors a team of underwriters and/or underwriting assistants, providing training, guidance, and performance feedback.

  • Reviews and approves risks within delegated authority while assisting team members with complex or referral accounts.

  • Monitors catastrophe exposure, including aggregation management, geographic spread, and concentration of risk across portfolios.

  • Applies underwriting judgment to evaluate property characteristics, construction types, protection classes, catastrophe modeling outputs, and loss history.

  • Ensures accurate rating, pricing, and policy issuance in accordance with underwriting guidelines and profitability targets.

  • Works closely with leadership and carrier partners to maintain alignment on underwriting appetite, CAT thresholds, and portfolio performance.

  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with brokers and agents, providing guidance on appetite, submissions, and program changes.

  • Analyzes portfolio performance, identifies trends, and implements underwriting or pricing adjustments to improve results.

  • Participates in strategic planning, including product development, guideline enhancements, and workflow improvements.

  • Ensures proper documentation of underwriting files, including applications, inspection reports, catastrophe modeling data, and loss history.

  • Supports audits, reporting, and compliance initiatives related to catastrophe exposure and underwriting practices.

 


We prefer candidates with:

  • 5+ years of commercial property underwriting experience, with a strong focus on CAT-exposed risks (e.g., wind, hail, flood, earthquake).

  • Prior experience underwriting habitation risks (apartments, condos, multi-family) preferred.

  • Leadership or supervisory experience within an underwriting environment strongly preferred.

  • Experience with catastrophe modeling tools (e.g., RMS, AIR, CoreLogic) is a plus.

  • Strong understanding of commercial property forms, coverages, and valuation methods.

  • Excellent analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to manage internal teams and external relationships.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; CPCU, AU, or similar designation strongly desired.
